Plans for the film began way
back in 2005 but the project was dropped eventually and replaced with Om
Shanti Om (2007). After Tees
Maar Khan (2010), Farah began
to consider the possibilities of the film and the scripting was done by October
2012. Farah Khan wanted an "already-established" actress in the lead
role opposite Shahrukh Khan. Names such as Sonakshi Sinha, Parineeti Chopra, Katrina
Kaif and Deepika
Padukone were rumored to play the role and eventually the latter was
finalized. As for the lead role, Khan was the director's first choice for the
film. Shahrukh Khan will be
playing the role of a psycho lover in the film which has Deepika in the role of
a dancer, and will play a Marathi girl. At a point, John
Abraham was to play one of the supporting roles but Sonu Sood replaced him. Boman
Irani was confirmed by the director during an interview. In
August 2013, Jackie
Shroff was finalised to play the film's antagonist.
